What is happening at 1199?

 

For the first time in nearly four decades, 1199SEIU is facing a contested internal election. Some officers and staff employed at 1199 are trying to sow division within our Union by running a slate against our incumbent President George Gresham and Secretary-Treasurer Milly Silva. This is being done to advance personal agendas, rather than in the best interests of 1199 members.

 

Our movement, 1 Union 1 Future, isn’t concerned with job titles or whose “turn” it is to be President. We are 100% focused on maintaining 1199’s record of success, continuing to improve members’ jobs, and preserving member-driven decision making at 1199.

Why is President George Gresham running for re-election?

 

Because members asked him to! Today, 1199SEIU is at the height of our contract victories and political influence. President Gresham’s current term has been the most successful yet, and like they say, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Especially at a time like now when healthcare jobs and funding are under attack, we cannot risk a haphazard change in leadership.

 

This fall, George was ranked as the #1 most influential labor leader for “delivering for his members and addressing health equity.” No one comes close to his national clout and ability to fight the bosses and move a winning program.

 

We know that some people are spreading offensive lies about President Gresham’s health to claim he should step down. We totally reject these discriminatory smears! George is a proven fighter with a tremendous work ethic and an undefeated record—his results in winning for members speak for themselves.
